For many years, Lisa Conway founder of The Hive, has wanted to bring unique, locally produced art and crafts to the high-street. When she retired from her marketing career of 25 years, she took up jewellery making, then abstract painting, then sewing and finally ceramics, which she loves with a passion.
Over the years she has amassed a huge collection of products that she has made by hand, but where to sell them all? It was time to realise her dream and open a shop.
The Hive – Gift Shop and Gallery gives artists of all types and ages the chance to take space and sell their creations in a retail environment all year round - an endless craft fair or fayre of craft you could say.
The Hive is a ‘concession based’ retail offering, a simple and affordable proposition. The risks and large overheads associated with owning/leasing a shop, plus the day to day running of it, are prohibitive for most people. By splitting the cost, literally, in to individual, carefully chosen ‘concessions’, on-going retail sales are achievable and affordable for the makers and artists. It is a great concept and works well with a reduced risk for all concerned.
Lisa views the venture as something of a philanthropic exercise; to encourage the growth and development of local craftsmanship and support for local artists, as well as ensuring customers are offered a collection of totally unique and beautiful products to choose from. She hopes the local community and tourists will schedule a visit to the new shop soon.
